History of Mason Village
In the early 1880s, a train track was built through northern Wisconsin. This track, run by the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway, crossed the White River. This spot is where Mason Village is today.
After the railroad was set up, a man named John Alexander Humbird started the White River Lumber Company. This company cut down trees for wood. The lumber mill was built near the White River. It helped the area grow and brought many people to settle there.
A post office opened in Mason in 1883. The village's name, Mason, comes from Freemasonry, which is a social and charitable organization.
The lumber mill closed in 1914. This happened because there were not enough trees left to keep the mill running. When the mill closed, many people moved away, and the town's population got much smaller.
In 1925, Mason became an official village. This meant it had its own local government, separate from the surrounding township.
The land where Mason Village is located was originally the home of the Ojibwe people.
