Exploring the Mass Effect Universe
Mass Effect has a super detailed fictional universe. Many ideas in the game are based on real science. You can meet over 20 different alien races in Mass Effect. More alien races were planned for the games that came after this one.
Main Ideas in the Game
The game is set in a science fiction world. It explores big ideas like space and how people treat each other, sometimes unfairly (this is called racism). It also looks at different beliefs and what it means to be human. The main story of the game is about robots or AI that have gone out of control. This is a classic science fiction idea. The lead writer for BioWare said that movies like Star Wars, Aliens, and Blade Runner helped inspire the game's world and story.
Where and When the Story Happens
Mass Effect is set 180 years in the future, in the year 2183. The story says that humans found some very old technology on Mars. This discovery allowed them to build faster-than-light spacecraft. With this new technology, humans explored the entire Solar System.
About twenty years before the game begins, explorers found something amazing. They discovered that Pluto's moon, Charon, was actually a Mass Relay. Mass Relays are special devices that let you travel across huge distances in the galaxy very quickly. They are ancient machines built by the Protheans. The Protheans were a very old race that used to rule the galaxy, but they are now extinct. These Mass Relays allow spacecraft and people to be sent from one distant part of the galaxy to another.
