History of Mastic Beach
Becoming a Village
In 2010, some people living in Mastic Beach wanted it to become an official "village." They felt that the larger town of Brookhaven wasn't doing enough to keep the streets clean and fix old, run-down buildings. They believed that if Mastic Beach became a village, it could have its own rules and make the community look nicer.
However, others were worried that becoming a village would mean higher taxes for residents. They also thought the estimated cost for running the new village was too low. The plan was for the village to handle building rules, while Brookhaven would still take care of police, fire, and trash services.
On August 31, 2010, people voted on the idea. Most people voted "yes," and Mastic Beach officially became a village. Paul Breschard was elected as the first mayor. The village's borders were a bit different from the earlier census-designated place.
Why the Village Dissolved
After a few years, residents voted again on November 8, 2016. This time, they decided to go back to being an unincorporated area. This means that the Town of Brookhaven would once again handle all services. The vote was 1,922 people for dissolving the village and 1,215 against it.
The main reasons for this change were disagreements about how the village was run and concerns about money. A plan for dissolving the village was created and approved in March 2017. The village officially dissolved on January 1, 2018.
