Early Life and Education
Maurice Saatchi was born in Baghdad, Iraq. He is the third of four sons. His family was Jewish and moved to London, England, in 1947. They moved to avoid problems that many Iraqi Jews faced at that time.
His father, Nathan, was a successful textile merchant. He started his business again in London. The family eventually settled in a large house in Highgate.
Maurice went to Tollington Grammar School. He then studied Sociology at the London School of Economics. He graduated in 1967 with top honors. His first job was at Haymarket Publications. There, he met important people and learned about the advertising industry.
Career in Advertising
Starting Saatchi & Saatchi
In 1970, Maurice and his brother Charles started their own advertising company. It was called Saatchi & Saatchi. They became known for many successful ad campaigns. One famous campaign was for the Conservative Party in 1979. It used the slogan "Labour isn't working."
Maurice Saatchi was the chairman of the company. By 1986, Saatchi & Saatchi had become the largest advertising agency in the world. It had over 600 offices globally.
Founding M&C Saatchi
In 1995, Maurice and Charles left Saatchi & Saatchi. They then started a new company called M&C Saatchi. Many of their staff and clients, like British Airways, joined them. This new company also became very successful.
In 2019, M&C Saatchi had some financial issues. Maurice Saatchi resigned from his role as an executive director in December 2019.
Political Career
Maurice Saatchi became a life peer on October 4, 1996. This means he was given the title of Baron Saatchi and became a member of the House of Lords. He represents the Conservative Party there.
He worked closely with Michael Howard, who later became the leader of the Conservatives. Saatchi believed in making the tax system simpler. He thought that people with the lowest incomes should not pay income tax. In 2014, he suggested that small businesses should not pay corporate tax. He also thought investors in these businesses should not pay capital gains tax.
Role in the 2005 Election
In November 2003, Maurice Saatchi became the joint chairman of the Conservative Party. He helped run the party's campaign for the 2005 United Kingdom general election. After the election, he stepped down from this role.
He later wrote about his experiences in a pamphlet. He mentioned some reasons why the election campaign did not go as planned:
- He felt the party did not have a clear message.
- He thought they focused too much on immigration based on research.
- He believed economics, usually a strong point for Conservatives, became less important.
- He felt they underestimated public intelligence with simple policy descriptions.
He suggested that future Conservative leaders should have a strong "moral purpose" for the party.
Medical Innovation Bill
After his wife, Josephine Hart, passed away from ovarian cancer, Maurice Saatchi started a campaign. He wanted to change a UK law. He believed the law stopped doctors from trying new treatments because they worried about being sued.
His idea, called the Medical Innovation Bill, was introduced in 2013. The government supported it as it moved through parliament. This bill aimed to help doctors use innovative treatments more freely.
Other Activities
Maurice Saatchi has held several other important roles. He was the chairman of Finsbury Food Group plc. He is also a governor of the London School of Economics. He serves as a trustee for the Museum of Garden History. He is also a director of the Centre for Policy Studies. From 1988 to 1996, he was a trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Awards and Community Work
Maurice Saatchi received the Medal of Honour from the St. George's Society of New York. This award recognizes people who have done great things for British interests or the international community.
He and his brother also founded the Saatchi Shul. This is an independent Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Maida Vale, London. It was established in 1998.
Personal Life
Maurice Saatchi married Gillian Osband in 1972. She was a children's book editor. They divorced in 1984. Later that year, he married the novelist Josephine Hart. She passed away in 2011.
He owns a country property called Old Hall in Staplefield, West Sussex. It is a large estate with gardens, trees, and lakes. Maurice Saatchi enjoys gardening and designed the gardens there.
