Early Life and Education
Maurice Saatchi was born in Baghdad, Iraq, on June 21, 1946. He was the third of four sons in a wealthy Jewish family. His parents were Nathan Saatchi and Daisy Ezer.
In 1947, his family moved to London, England, to avoid problems in Iraq. His father, Nathan, started a successful textile business there. The family eventually settled in a large house in Highgate.
Maurice went to Tollington Grammar School. Later, he studied Sociology at the London School of Economics and graduated in 1967. His first job was at Haymarket Publications. There, he met important people and learned about the advertising world.
Career in Advertising
Maurice Saatchi is best known for his work in advertising. He helped create two very successful advertising agencies.
Starting Saatchi & Saatchi
In 1970, Maurice and his brother Charles started their own advertising company, Saatchi & Saatchi. They became famous for many successful ad campaigns. One of their most well-known campaigns was "Labour isn't working." This was a poster for the Conservative Party during the 1979 British general election. They also created ads for the cigarette brand Silk Cut.
Maurice Saatchi was the chairman of the company. By 1986, Saatchi & Saatchi had become the largest advertising agency in the world. It had over 600 offices globally.
Founding M&C Saatchi
In 1995, Maurice and Charles left Saatchi & Saatchi after some disagreements. They quickly started a new advertising company called M&C Saatchi. Many of their old staff and clients, including British Airways, joined them. This new company also became very successful.
In late 2019, Maurice Saatchi resigned from M&C Saatchi. This happened after the company reported some financial issues.
Political Career
Maurice Saatchi also has a career in politics.
Joining the House of Lords
On October 4, 1996, Maurice Saatchi was given the title Baron Saatchi. This made him a life peer, which means he became a member of the House of Lords. The House of Lords is part of the UK Parliament. He sits there as a member of the Conservative Party.
Role in the Conservative Party
Under the leadership of Iain Duncan Smith, Lord Saatchi was a spokesman for the Treasury in the House of Lords. He worked closely with Michael Howard. Saatchi believed that the tax system should be simpler. He also thought that the poorest people in the UK should not have to pay income tax. In 2014, he suggested that small businesses should not pay corporate tax. He also said that investors in these businesses should not pay capital gains tax.
In November 2003, when Michael Howard became the leader of the Conservatives, Saatchi was made joint chairman of the party. He helped run the party's campaign for the 2005 general election. After the election, he stepped down from this role.
He later wrote about his experiences in the election campaign. He shared what he felt went wrong. He suggested that future Conservative leaders should focus on a "moral purpose" for the party.
Medical Innovation Bill
After his wife, Josephine Hart, passed away from ovarian cancer, Maurice Saatchi started a campaign. He wanted to change a UK law that he believed stopped doctors from using new treatments. Doctors were afraid of being sued if new treatments didn't work.
His idea, called the Medical Innovation Bill, was introduced in 2013. The government supported it as it went through parliament. This bill aimed to help doctors try innovative treatments without fear of legal problems.
