Maydena is a small town in Tasmania, Australia. It sits right next to the Tyenna River.
You can find Maydena on the Gordon River Road. It's southwest of New Norfolk, and you'll pass through places like Bushy Park and Westerway to get there. You'll also go past Mount Field National Park and Russell Falls, which are great spots to visit! The Gordon River Road continues on to big lakes like Lake Pedder and Lake Gordon.
Maydena used to be called Junee. In the early 1900s, it was a small place that helped people get to the Adamsfield Osmiridium mines. Osmiridium is a rare, shiny metal.
Later, between 1947 and 1950, a company called Australian Newsprint Mills built about 100 houses here. These homes were for workers who cut down trees to make paper at their mill in Boyer, Tasmania.
In 1954, Maydena had 518 people living there. By the 2021 census, the population was 198. The town's primary school and a community online center have both closed down.
History of Maydena
Maydena once had a special railway line. This railway, which was 3 ft 6 inches (1,067 mm) wide, was used for carrying heavy things. It moved timber (wood) and osmiridium ore. It also helped the Hydro Electric Commission build the Gordon River Road and the huge Lake Gordon Dam. This dam helps power the Gordon Power Station, which is the biggest in Tasmania!
The railway stopped running in 1991. But now, a part of the old track is used for a fun tourist activity called 'Railtrack Riders'. You can pedal along the old railway line!
Maydena's Post Office opened on May 1, 1944.
