Maysville's History

The first post office in this area opened on March 19, 1878. It closed a few months later. But it reopened on June 17, 1878, with a new name: Beef Creek. This name came from a nearby stream called Beef Creek. This stream flows into the Washita River.

On September 19, 1902, the town moved about a mile north. It moved to be closer to the new train tracks. These tracks belonged to the Kiowa, Chickasha and Fort Smith Railway. The post office also moved to the new spot. At this time, the town's name changed to Maysville. This new name honored two local ranchers, David Mayes and John Mayes.

When it was first founded, Beef Creek (later Maysville) was part of Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation.
