About the Russow's Gecko Name
The special name russowii was given to this gecko to honor an Estonian scientist. His name was Valerian von Russow, and he lived from 1842 to 1879.
Where Russow's Geckos Live
Mediodactylus russowii geckos can be found in many parts of Asia. Their home range stretches from Russia all the way to Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. You can also find them in northeastern Iran, northwestern China, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Russow's Gecko Habitat
These geckos prefer to live in natural places like deserts and shrublands. They can be found in areas that are very low, even 45 m (148 ft) below sea level. They also live in high places, up to 2,000 m (6,600 ft) above sea level.
Russow's Gecko Reproduction
The Mediodactylus russowii gecko reproduces by laying eggs. This means they are oviparous. The female gecko lays eggs, and the baby geckos hatch from them.
Types of Russow's Geckos (Subspecies)
There are two main types, or subspecies, of the Russow's gecko. These are officially recognized:
- Mediodactylus russowii russowii (Strauch, 1887)
- Mediodactylus russowii zarudnyi (Nikolsky, 1900)
If you see a name in parentheses after a subspecies, it means that type was first described under a different group name. Later, scientists decided it belonged to the Mediodactylus group.
