Melinda Marie Doolittle was born on October 6, 1977. She is an American singer. Melinda became famous when she finished third on the sixth season of American Idol.

Before American Idol, Melinda was a professional backup singer. She sang for many famous artists. These included Michael McDonald, Kirk Franklin, and Aaron Neville. She also sang for BeBe and CeCe Winans, and Alabama.

About Melinda's Life

Melinda Doolittle was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Her parents are Steve and Marguerite Duke Doolittle. She grew up in Brentwood, Tennessee. She considers Brentwood her home.

She finished high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1995.

Melinda first wanted to sing at a youth group talent show. Her mom told her she would have to "pray – HARD". Melinda prayed and practiced a lot. On the night of the show, she closed her eyes and sang. A different voice came out! She sang perfectly and everyone loved it. This made her realize she could do amazing things. From then on, Melinda could not only sing, but she could also hear harmonies.

Melinda has been singing since the seventh grade. But her professional singing career started in 1999. She studied music at Belmont University. Her vocal teacher since college has been Janet Kenyon.

Melinda on American Idol

Audition for the Show

Melinda first tried out for American Idol in Memphis, Tennessee. She went with friends who were also auditioning. She decided to try out just for fun. She sang "For Once In My Life" by Stevie Wonder.

The judges liked her singing. But they were worried she seemed nervous. They told her to believe in herself.

Semi-finals Performances

Melinda made it into the Top 24 singers. They all performed on TV. In her first TV performance, she sang "Sweet Sweet Baby (Since You’ve Been Gone)" by Aretha Franklin. The judges loved it.

The next week, she sang "My Funny Valentine". The judges said it was the "best vocal of the night". Simon Cowell called it "incredible". Paula Abdul said it was "astounding".

For her last semi-final song, Melinda sang "I'm a Woman". Simon Cowell called her "a little tiger". On March 8, 2007, Melinda made it into the show's Top 12.

Finals and Elimination

Melinda always received great comments from the judges. She was never in the bottom two or three singers. She was eliminated on May 16, 2007. She finished in third place. Simon Cowell later said he thought she should have won.

After American Idol

After the American Idol finale, Melinda appeared on Larry King Live. Simon Cowell said on Good Morning America that Melinda should have won Season 6.

Melinda joined the 2007 American Idols tour. She performed "Proud Mary" with Sanjaya Malakar. She also sang a Supremes tribute with LaKisha Jones. Her solo song was "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman".

A writer from The New York Times called Melinda "phenomenally gifted". He said she was like a mix of Gladys Knight and Tina Turner. He believed she would have a successful career after Idol.

Melinda sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at an NBA game in 2007. It was Game 5 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons.

She was a guest performer on the Michael W. Smith and friends Caribbean Cruise in July 2008. She also joined his Christmas tour that same year. She sings with Michael W. Smith on the song "Amazing Love". This song is on the soundtrack for the movie Billy: The Early Years.

Melinda has also been part of a web show called "Moments With Melinda". Fans could call in and talk to her. She also helped write the book Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul.

Her first song, "My Funny Valentine", came out in February 2008. It was released by Sony BMG. Melinda said she wanted to make a CD of "soul music". In July 2008, she signed with Hi Fi Recordings. Her first CD, Coming Back to You, was released on February 3, 2009. It sold over 30,000 copies in its first month. The album has sold over 53,000 copies in total.

Melinda as an Author

Melinda wrote a book called Beyond Me: Finding Your Way to Life's Next Level. It is about her life before, during, and after American Idol. The book was released on April 20, 2010.

Recent Projects (2013-Present)

In 2013, Melinda released a song called "Never Giving Up". She co-wrote this song about her struggles after Idol and how she overcame them. It was part of an EP (Extended Play) called You're the Reason. This EP came out on November 12, 2013. USA Today praised the new music. They said it had "snap and crackle" and "live-wire energy".

Since 2011, Melinda has co-hosted "Reality Check". This is a weekly American Idol recap web series on TVLine.com. She hosts it with Michael Slezak.

In 2016, Melinda worked with the band Postmodern Jukebox. They performed an old-school style cover of Britney Spears's song "Toxic". This song is on their album Squad Goals.

In June 2007, Melinda visited Zambia with Laura Bush. They worked with the Malaria No More organization. Their goal was to give out bed nets and teach people about malaria. During the trip, Melinda sang with a praise band in Lusaka.

In November 2007, Melinda was interviewed by CNN. She talked about supporting the Malaria No More campaign. She explained how donating bed nets can help stop malaria in Africa. She mentioned that her fans donated bed nets for her at every American Idol tour stop. They also made a big donation on her birthday.
