Exploring the History of Memphis
The community of Memphis has a long and interesting past. It began in the 1880s as a planned area of land. This land was next to the city of Palmetto.
How Memphis Began
The land where Memphis now stands was first owned by Robert Willis. He was born in Tennessee. Later, I.E. Barwick bought the land. He divided it into smaller pieces for people to buy and build homes.
The main parts of the community were generally west of 16th Avenue East and west of U.S. 41. They were also located between 17th and 25th Streets East. By 1897, Memphis already had a few businesses. These included a clothing store, a crate mill, and a bakery that was being built.
A Community's Growth and Changes
Over time, Memphis became a place where many African American families lived. This happened during a time when communities were often separated by race. This period is known as segregation.
The Old Memphis cemetery is a very important place. More than 600 people are buried there. Many of them were early African American settlers. Some of these settlers had been freed from slavery. The cemetery is north of the community. It stopped being used for burials by the 1970s.
Early residents included Reverend Daniel and Isabel Baity. Reverend Baity became the first minister of the first African American church in Sarasota.
The close-knit feeling of the community changed in the 1960s. This was when U.S. 41 was built through the area. In recent years, people have worked to clean up the old cemetery. It had fallen into disrepair. In 2013, a special marker was put up at the cemetery entrance. This marker helps people remember the history of the community.
