Early Life and Education
Michael Johns was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He went to Emmaus High School. In 1986, he earned a degree in business from the University of Miami, where he also studied economics. At the University of Miami, he received a special award called the Iron Arrow Honor Society. He also studied in England at the University of Cambridge.
Career in Public Policy
Johns started his career in public policy by working with Representative Donald L. Ritter.
Working at The Heritage Foundation
In 1986, he began working at The Heritage Foundation. This is a group in Washington, D.C., that studies public issues and suggests ideas for government. Johns helped edit their magazine, Policy Review. He wrote articles about national security and foreign policy.
Later, he became an expert on African and Third World affairs for the foundation. He researched and wrote about many topics. These included South Africa, U.S. relations with Zaire and Kenya, and the famine in Ethiopia. He also studied the civil wars in Angola and Mozambique.
