Dr. Michael K. Dorsey is an expert in environmental science. He is also an advocate, a scholar, and a business person. He helped start Around the Corner Capital, which advises on energy and impact finance. Dr. Dorsey served on the board of directors for the Sierra Club for 11 years. He has also written articles for newspapers like the Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Education and Learning

Dr. Dorsey has several degrees from different universities. He earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Environmental Policy from the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability. He also has a Master of Forest Science (M.F.S) from Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. Additionally, he holds a Master of Arts (M.A.) in anthropology from Johns Hopkins University.

Since the late 1980s, Dr. Dorsey has worked with many groups. These include companies, non-profits, and governments. He focuses on how environmental rules, money, and economic growth connect. He has worked in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

In 1991, Dr. Dorsey was a youth delegate for a big environmental meeting in the U.S. The next year, in 1992, he was the youngest non-government representative for the U.S. at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1993, he joined a special group for President Bill Clinton about sustainable development.

After getting his Ph.D., Dr. Dorsey became a professor. From 2005 to 2012, he taught environmental studies at Dartmouth College. He also led the college's Climate Justice Research Project. In 2013, he became a member of the Club of Rome. He has also been a visiting professor at other universities. These include Wesleyan University in the U.S., and universities in South Africa and Sweden.

Leading Environmental Efforts

Dr. Dorsey has held many important leadership roles. He served as a Director for the Sierra Club, a large environmental organization. He was on their national board for a total of eleven years.

He also helped start the Center for Environmental Health in San Francisco. He is on the advisory board for the Plastic Pollution Coalition. He also co-founded the Environmental Leadership Program. In 2017, he joined the board of Food First.

While at Dartmouth College, Dr. Dorsey advised the Barack Obama 2008 presidential campaign on environmental issues. This was from 2007 to 2008. In 2010, he was appointed to an advisory committee for the United States Environmental Protection Agency. He was re-appointed in 2012.

After leaving Dartmouth, Dr. Dorsey worked with students at Wesleyan University. They developed a plan for climate action. This plan later helped create the US Climate Plan, which is now known as the Sunrise Movement Education Fund. This group works to raise awareness and support for climate policy solutions.

Dr. Dorsey also co-founded Islands First. This group helps small island nations deal with the big threats from climate change. He also helped start Detroit XPAC. This group helps people from Detroit and Michigan support candidates who want to improve their hometowns in a responsible way.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Dorsey has received several awards for his work:

  • He received the Dartmouth College Social Justice Award for his "Ongoing Commitment" in 2011.
  • He was a Thurgood Marshall Dissertation Fellow from 2001 to 2002.
  • He was nominated for the Ford Foundation's Leadership for a Changing World Award in 2000.
  • He received the Paul Harris Medal from Rotary International in 1997. This is a high honor for service to humanity.
