Naming the Valhalla Mountains

The name "Valhalla Mountains" first appeared on a map in 1890. This map was created by George Mercer Dawson for the Geological Survey of Canada. Dawson chose names from Norse mythology for many mountains and ranges in this area.

How Midgard Peak Got Its Name

Following the Norse mythology theme, the name "Midgard Peak" was suggested in February 1970. It was put forward by Robert Dean from the Kootenay Mountaineering Club. The name was officially accepted on March 3, 1971, by the Geographical Names Board of Canada. In Norse mythology, Midgard is known as the home of humans on Earth.

Mountain Climate and Water

Midgard Peak experiences a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold and snowy winters. The summers are usually mild. Temperatures can drop below −20 °C (−4 °F). With the wind chill, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −30 °C (−22 °F).

Water from the mountain flows down into streams and rivers. These streams eventually join the Slocan River.
