Miguel Arturo Layún Prado, born on June 25, 1988, is a famous Mexican former professional football player. He mostly played as a right-back defender.

Layún started his professional football journey in 2006. He played for several teams in Mexico, Italy, England, and Portugal. He became the first Mexican player to play in Italy's top league, Serie A.

He won two league titles with Club América in Mexico. Later, he joined FC Porto in Portugal. Layún also played for the Mexican national team from 2013 to 2020. He represented Mexico in two FIFA World Cups and won the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Club Career Highlights

Starting Out in Mexico

Miguel Layún began his professional career in 2006 with Gallos Caliente Tijuana. This team was a reserve team for Querétaro F.C.. He made his first professional appearance on October 5, 2006.

After that, he moved to C.D. Veracruz, a club in his home state. He played his first game in Mexico's top league, Liga MX, on April 28, 2007. He stayed with Veracruz until 2009.

Playing in Italy with Atalanta

In 2009, Layún moved to Italy to play for Atalanta. This was a big step, as he became the first Mexican player ever to play in the Serie A, Italy's highest football league.

He made his debut in Serie A on September 27, 2009. He played two games for Atalanta during the 2009–10 season.

Success with Club América

On December 21, 2009, Layún returned to Mexico and joined Club América. He quickly became an important player for the team. He scored his first goal for América on May 2, 2010.

A major moment in his career came on May 26, 2013. Layún scored the winning penalty kick in the Clausura 2013 Final against Cruz Azul. This win gave him his first league championship.

Before the Apertura 2014 season, Layún was chosen as one of the team captains. On September 26, he scored four goals in one game, helping América win 4–1. On December 14, 2014, he captained América to another league title.

Time in England with Watford

In December 2014, Layún moved to Europe again. He signed with Watford, an English club. He made his debut in the EFL Championship on January 10, 2015.

In his first season, Layún played 17 games. Watford earned promotion to the Premier League, England's top league. On August 8, he scored a goal in his Premier League debut.

Moving to Portugal with Porto

On August 31, 2015, Layún joined FC Porto in Portugal on a loan deal. He made his debut for Porto on September 12, 2015. He scored his first goal for the club in the Champions League on November 4.

Porto made his move permanent in May 2016. He continued to play for Porto until 2018.

Loan to Sevilla

On January 30, 2018, Layún went on loan to Sevilla, a Spanish club. He played for them for the rest of the 2017–18 season.

Playing for Villarreal and Monterrey

After his loan at Sevilla, Layún joined Villarreal in Spain on July 11, 2018. He played for Villarreal for one season.

In January 2019, he returned to Mexico to play for Monterrey. He played for Monterrey until June 2021.

Return to América and Retirement

On June 3, 2021, Layún made a special return to Club América. He signed a new contract with his former club.

On October 8, 2023, Layún announced that he would retire from professional football at the end of the year. He played his very last match as a professional in the Apertura 2023 league final. He retired as a champion, as Club América won the match against Tigres UANL.

In 2013, Miguel Layún was called up to play for the Mexican national team for the first time. He played in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He made his debut on July 11 in a game against Canada.

He was also part of the team that played in the World Cup playoffs against New Zealand. Mexico won and qualified for the World Cup.

On May 8, 2014, Layún was chosen for Mexico's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He played in all three group matches, helping Mexico reach the round-of-16.

In May 2018, Layún was again named to Mexico's squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He played in all four of Mexico's games in that tournament.
