Michael "Mike" Eric Johnson (born May 2, 1967) is an American football coach who used to be a professional quarterback. He has worked with many teams in both college football and the National Football League (NFL). Currently, he is the co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach for the Syracuse Orange. An offensive coordinator is the coach in charge of the team's offense, which tries to score points.

Johnson has had a long career in football. He was once the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL. He also served as the temporary head coach for the UCLA Bruins for one game. After coaching in the NFL, he became the head coach for a high school team before returning to coach at major universities like Oregon and Syracuse.

Playing Career

Before he became a coach, Mike Johnson played quarterback, the leader of the offense on the field. His journey took him through college, professional leagues in the U.S., and even Canada.

College Football

Johnson started his college football career at Arizona State University from 1985 to 1986. He then played at Mesa Community College in 1987, where he was named a Junior College All-American, an honor for the best players at that level.

He finished his college career playing for the University of Akron from 1988 to 1989. His skill on the field earned him the title of Akron's Athlete of the Year in 1990.

Professional Football

After college, Johnson played professionally for several teams.

After his playing days were over, Johnson used his knowledge of the game to become a coach. He has coached many different positions, helping players improve their skills.

Early Coaching Jobs

Johnson began coaching at Oregon State University. He coached wide receivers from 1997 to 1998 and then became the quarterbacks coach in 1999.

He then moved to the NFL, coaching quarterbacks for the San Diego Chargers from 2000 to 2001. From 2003 to 2005, he was the quarterbacks coach for the Atlanta Falcons, where he worked with the famous quarterback Michael Vick. For a short time in 2003, he also acted as the team's offensive coordinator.

Before joining the 49ers, Johnson was the wide receivers coach for the Baltimore Ravens for the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

NFL Offensive Coordinator

In 2009, Johnson was hired by the San Francisco 49ers. On September 27, 2010, he was promoted to offensive coordinator, putting him in charge of the team's entire offense.

When the 49ers got a new head coach after the 2010 season, Johnson left the team.

Return to College Football

In 2011, Johnson joined UCLA as an assistant coach. When the head coach was fired near the end of the season, Johnson was named the interim (temporary) head coach. He led the team in their final game of the year, the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

After a few years away from college football, where he coached a high school team, Johnson returned in 2017. He became the wide receiver coach for the University of Oregon Ducks.

On February 9, 2022, Johnson was hired as the wide receivers coach for the Syracuse Orange. He was later promoted to co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach in 2024.
