Player stats at PFR

Michael Jamaine Rumph, born on November 8, 1979, is an American who used to play professional football in the National Football League (NFL). He played as a safety and cornerback. Today, he helps the Miami Hurricanes football team find new players as their assistant director of recruiting.

High School Football Star

Michael Rumph went to Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach, Florida. He was a really talented player, even named one of the top 50 players in the country by SuperPrep! During his senior year, he showed off his skills by gaining 519 yards from running and catching the ball. He also scored five touchdowns. On defense, he made 108 tackles and caught six interceptions, running them back for 172 yards.

Besides football, Michael was also a great track athlete. He was a star in the triple jump and long jump events across the state.

College Career at Miami

Rumph played college football at the University of Miami. He was known as a quiet but very effective player. His time at Miami ended with a huge win: a national championship in his senior year!

During his college career, Rumph made 117 tackles and forced two fumbles. He also caught six interceptions, even running one back for a touchdown. He was recognized for his talent, being chosen for the second-team All-Big East team in his sophomore and senior years. In his junior year, he was a first-team selection, showing how much he improved.

Playing in the NFL

San Francisco 49ers Years

The San Francisco 49ers picked Michael Rumph in the first round of the 2002 NFL draft. He was the 27th player chosen overall. When he first joined, he played as a cornerback. However, the 49ers soon moved him to play safety. This change happened because he was a strong tackler, but he struggled a bit with covering players one-on-one. Unfortunately, he missed many games in the 2004 and 2005 seasons due to injuries.

Time with Washington and St. Louis

On August 14, 2006, Rumph was traded to the Washington Redskins. He played for them for a short time before they released him on December 27, 2006.

After that, the St. Louis Rams signed him on March 20, 2007. But he was released again on August 3, 2007. Michael Rumph officially retired from playing professional football in July 2008.

Life After the NFL

After his playing career, Michael Rumph started coaching. In 2010, he became an assistant coach for the Miramar Everglades team. He then coached briefly at the Miami Carol City Senior High School.

Later, he became the head coach for the varsity football team at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida. He coached there until 2015. In 2013, he took over from former Miami Dolphins player and coach Jeff Dellenbach. After leaving American Heritage, Rumph accepted a coaching job at the University of Miami. He worked there as the cornerbacks coach for several years.

Personal Life

Michael Rumph is married to Veronica. They have two children named Jalen and Sienna. For a while, Michael and Veronica also ran a puppy store together.
