The Miller Hill Mall is a big shopping mall located in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. It sits right where U.S. Highway 53 meets Trinity Road. This mall is owned by a company called Simon Property Group. It has 103 different stores and a food court where you can grab a bite to eat.
Some of the main stores, called anchor stores, include Men's Wearhouse, JCPenney, St. Louis County Auditor Service Center, Dick's Sporting Goods, DSW, Barnes & Noble, Ulta Beauty, Sport Clips, and AT&T. There are also two large empty spaces that used to be Younkers and Sears. If you're hungry, you can find places like Applebee's, Pizza Ranch (which is opening soon!), Noodles & Company, Chipotle Mexican Grill, and Chilly Billy's Frozen Yogurt.
Mall History: How It Grew
The Miller Hill Mall first opened its doors in 1973. It was made bigger in 1987. One of the original main stores, Glass Block, later became Younkers.
Over the years, the mall has changed quite a bit. In 2001, a store called Montgomery Ward was replaced by new stores like DSW Shoe Warehouse, Barnes & Noble, and Old Navy. This also made the outside of the mall look much nicer with new designs.
More changes happened in 2007. An area that used to have a Walgreens store and some smaller shops was torn down. This space was then turned into a new area with a fresh mall entrance. It also added stores that face the highway, such as Men's Wearhouse, Noodles and Company, Chipotle, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, and AT&T.
In 2018, two of the mall's big anchor stores closed. Younkers closed in August 2018 because its parent company went out of business. Then, Sears also closed in September 2018 as part of a plan to close many stores across the country. This left Dick's Sporting Goods and JCPenney as the main traditional anchor stores.
Movies at the Mall: A Look Back
The mall used to have a movie theater called United Artist Theatre. It opened in 1976 and showed new movies for many years. However, it was a small theater with only three screens. It faced a lot of competition from bigger movie theaters that opened nearby in the 1980s and 1990s.
By the mid-1990s, the theater was getting old and needed updates. So, in the late 1990s, it became a "second-run" theater. This meant it showed movies that were already 6 to 12 months old, and tickets only cost $2.
Eventually, the entire movie theater section was torn down. The space was then taken over by Grandma's Restaurants, a local chain from Duluth. They first opened a restaurant called Little Angies, but it closed soon after. Grandma's then tried a new restaurant concept called The Great American Bar & Grill, which closed in 2011. The large sign for the Miller Hill Mall on U.S Highway 53 was updated after the movie theater closed. The part of the sign that used to show movie times now advertises local radio stations.
