The first home in Millville was a log cabin built by George White Pitkin. He built it with his sons, Ammon Paul Pitkin and George Orrin Pitkin, in 1859. This was even before the settlement had a name or was officially organized. The family moved into their new home in the spring of 1860.

This log cabin, located at 136 W. 100 South, became known as the Pitkin homestead. It was an important place for the early community. Both church services and school lessons were held there. George White Pitkin was an educated man, so he taught the children until a proper church and school building could be constructed.

Later, the Pitkin family built a stronger home. It was a two-story house made of rock, with walls that were about 0.6 meters (2 feet) thick. George White Pitkin passed away on November 26, 1873, at the age of 72. He is buried in the Millville cemetery.
