Milton is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 18,800 people lived there. Some people think the town was named after the famous poet, John Milton. Others believe its name comes from "Mill-town," because of all the mills that used to be there.

Milton is located in the middle of Saratoga County. It is southwest of Saratoga Springs.

The History of Milton

This area was first claimed in 1708. People started settling in the town around 1772.

How Milton Became a Town

The town of Milton was officially created in 1792. It was formed from a part of the town of Ballston. A year later, in 1793, some of Milton's land was used to help create the town of Greenfield. In 1807, Milton lost a bit more land when Ballston Spa became its own village.

Milton's Industrial Past

In the mid-to-late 1800s, Milton was a busy place for factories. One of the most famous was the paper mills owned by George West. He was known as the "Paper Bag King" because he invented square-bottomed paper bags. He sold millions of them after the American Civil War.

Other important factories included those that made tools, like the ones owned by Isaiah Blood. There was also a large mill for wood products run by Benjamin Barber. The National Folding Box paper mill and the Cottrell Paper Mill were also big. Today, only the Cottrell Paper Mill is still working. All these early mills used water power. They eventually closed because new factories started using electricity, which was more efficient.

The Ballston Terminal Railroad

In the early 1900s, Milton had its own special trolley line called the Ballston Terminal Railroad. It stretched about 12 miles from Ballston Spa to Rock City Falls and Middle Grove. This trolley was unusual because it mostly carried goods for factories, not passengers. It ran from 1898 to 1929.

Kesselring Site

A special research facility for the Navy, called the Kesselring Site, was built in West Milton in 1948. It focuses on nuclear power for ships.

Modern Milton
