Moenkopi (which is called Mùnqapi in Hopi and Oozéí Hayázhí in Navajo) is a special kind of community in Coconino County, Arizona. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). You can find it right next to Tuba City, just off U.S. Route 160. In 2020, about 771 people lived there.
Moenkopi is a very important Hopi community. It was started in 1870 by people from the Hopi village of Oraibi. They used it as a place to farm during the summer. Moenkopi is about 40 miles (64 km) west of Oraibi. The community is split into two parts: Upper Moenkopi and Lower Moenkopi.
This area is unique because it's a small part of the Hopi Reservation that is separated from the main reservation. It's like a small island of Hopi land surrounded by Navajo Nation territory. Even though it's small, it's home to a good number of Hopi people.
