Mohammed Karim Lamrani (Arabic: محمد كريم العمراني) was an important Moroccan politician and business leader. He was born on May 1, 1919, and passed away on September 20, 2018. He served as the Prime Minister of Morocco three different times, which is a very important leadership role in a country.
Early Life
Mohammed Karim Lamrani was born in the city of Fes on May 1, 1919.
Political Career
Lamrani served as the Prime Minister of Morocco for three separate periods. A prime minister is the head of the government in many countries. They work with the king or president to lead the country.
His first time as prime minister was from August 1971 to November 1972. Later, he served again from November 1983 to September 1986. His last term was from August 1992 to May 1994.
During his career, he also worked as the Minister of Economy and Finance. This role meant he was in charge of the country's money and economic plans. He held this position from August 1971 to April 1972.
Business Ventures
Beyond politics, Lamrani was also a very successful businessperson in Morocco. He started a large company called Groupe Safari. Today, his daughter, Saida, manages this company.
Groupe Safari has invested in many different businesses. These include parts of banks like Crédit du Maroc. They also own companies that deal with cars, like SMEIA, which sells BMW and Land Rover vehicles in Morocco.
Lamrani was known for being a pioneer in business. He helped create the first private business group in Morocco. This group is still active in many areas, such as industry, sales, services, and farming.
He also played a role in developing Morocco's banking system. He helped create Bank Al-Maghrib by merging two other banks. He also helped set up the Moroccan Bank for Foreign Trade. This bank was created to help Morocco export its products to other countries.
Later Years and Passing
Mohammed Karim Lamrani passed away on September 20, 2018, at the age of 99. Many important people attended his funeral in Casablanca, including Prince Moulay Rachid.
