Molinis was once a small town, or "municipality," located in the Graubünden area of Switzerland. It was part of the Plessur district. On January 1, 2013, Molinis joined with several other nearby towns like Calfreisen and Peist. They all became part of a larger town called Arosa.

A Look Back in Time

Early Mentions

The first time Molinis was written about was in the year 1335. Back then, it was known as Mulina. If you spoke Romansh, another language of Switzerland, it was called Molinas.

Where Molinis Is Located

Land Use and Nature

Before it joined with Arosa, Molinis covered about 13.2 square kilometers (which is about 5.1 square miles). A good part of this land, about 26.7%, was used for farming. Forests covered a large area, about 60.8% of the land.

Only a small bit, 1.4%, had buildings or roads. The rest, about 11%, was made up of things like rivers, glaciers, or mountains. These parts are not used for farming or building.

The Village Layout

Molinis is in the Schanfigg valley. The village itself is a haufendorf. This means it's an old-fashioned village that grew without a clear plan. Its buildings are often packed closely together around a central area.

Getting Around

Close by, you can find the Sankt Peter-Molinis train station. This station is on the Chur-Arosa railway line. It also serves the nearby town of Sankt Peter.
