Monitor, Oregon is a small, unincorporated community located in Marion County, Oregon, United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live that doesn't have its own official city government. Monitor is situated about 3 miles (about 5 kilometers) northeast of the city of Mt. Angel. It lies along Butte Creek in the beautiful Willamette Valley.

What's in a Name? The Story of Monitor

The name "Monitor" has an interesting story behind it. For a long time, people in the area believed the community was named after a type of flour mill called the "Monitor mill." A gristmill is a building where grain is ground into flour.

The Famous USS Monitor

However, in 1990, a descendant of one of the mill's original owners shared a different story. They said the mill was actually named after the Civil War ironclad warship called the USS Monitor. This was a very famous warship from the American Civil War.

The community of Monitor didn't officially exist until 1869. That's when the local post office was first opened. This was likely the first time the name "Monitor" was used for the area. Because of this, it's now thought that the community was probably named after the famous Civil War ship, not just a type of mill.
