Mont Belvieu's Story: How the City Grew
The first people to settle permanently in this area were Henry Griffith and his wife, Amelia Barrow. They came from Louisiana. Henry was a cattle rancher. At one time, all the land that is now Mont Belvieu was used for their cattle to graze.
Amos Barber was the second settler, and more people followed. After many years, Henry Griffith sold the land that became Mont Belvieu. Henry Griffith passed away and was buried without a grave marker. Amelia also passed away soon after. There is a memorial at an old oak tree. People say Amelia might be buried near where their house once stood. This area is now next to a large gas storage facility.
Over time, local industries grew in the area. However, there were some serious accidents at pipeline and chemical plants in the 1960s. In 1985, a big explosion at one plant caused concern for the entire salt dome. This dome was used to store liquid petroleum gas.
Because of these events, people in the town worked to get the chemical companies to buy their homes. These homes were very close to the plants. By 1990, about 200 families had sold their homes to these companies.
With help from these industries, the community was rebuilt. The new city was located two miles east of its original spot. New buildings included a city hall and several churches. The Barbers Hill ISD schools also moved to this new area. This new location, around Eagle Drive, is now the main residential part of Mont Belvieu. It has many neighborhoods and local shops.
Another important area grew south of the old city. This area is along Texas State Highway 146, north of Interstate 10. It mainly offers services for travelers on Interstate 10. You can find hotels, fast food, and gas stations there. The old city location, now called "the hill," connects these two new areas. It mostly has offices for chemical companies and empty spaces where old buildings once stood.
