Montes Llanos, also known as Monte Llano, is a small area or "barrio" in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is one of 31 barrios that make up the municipality of Ponce. Montes Llanos is a rural area, meaning it is more like the countryside than a busy city. It was officially created in 1898. It is one of seven rural barrios in Ponce, along with places like Magueyes and Tibes.

Montes Llanos is a mountainous area found in the middle part of the Ponce municipality. It is located north of the main city of Ponce. The name Montes Llanos comes from the old "Hato Llano" barrio. The word monte in Spanish means a natural, tall area of land covered with trees or plants.

What are the Boundaries of Montes Llanos?

Montes Llanos is surrounded by other areas. To the north, it is bordered by PR-505. To the south, it meets the hills north of Pastillo Road. The west side is bordered by hills west of Río Chiquito. To the east, it is bordered by hills west of Río Bayagan and also PR-505.

When looking at its neighbors, Montes Llanos is next to San Patricio and Maragüez to the north. To the south, it borders Portugués and Machuelo Arriba. To the west, it is next to Tibes, and to the east, it borders Maragüez.

How Many People Live in Montes Llanos?

Montes Llanos covers about 2.15 square miles of land. It does not have any water areas. In the year 2000, 462 people lived in Montes Llanos. This meant there were about 215 people per square mile. At that time, it was the least populated barrio in Ponce.

By 2010, the population of Montes Llanos grew to 523 people. The population density also increased to about 243.3 people per square mile. The community of Villas del Monte Verde is located within Montes Llanos.

What is the Geography Like?

Montes Llanos is a hilly area. The highest point in the barrio is 2,394 feet tall. This high point is found in the very northwest part of the barrio.

Roads and Important Places

The main road that goes through Montes Llanos is PR-505.

A special landmark in Montes Llanos is where the Río Chiquito river begins. The Río Chiquito flows into the Río Portugués river. Both of these rivers then enter the city limits of Ponce. Eventually, they join to become the Río Bucana and flow into the Caribbean Sea. This happens across from Caja de Muertos, which is a small island.
