Montfort is a small village in the state of Wisconsin, USA. It is located in two different counties: Grant County and Iowa County. In 2020, about 705 people lived there. Most of them lived in Grant County.
Montfort is part of a larger area that includes nearby cities like Madison and Platteville.

History of Montfort

Montfort got its name from an old fort on a nearby hill. The village area was first planned on April 3, 1848. This was done by Ben C. Eastman and Francis J. Dunn. They owned a lot of land in the area of Wingville, Wisconsin.
About 125 people lived in Montfort when it was first planned. It was a small settlement for many years. In 1893, it officially became a village. The population grew more when the first railroad arrived in 1879. On July 28, 1885, a tornado hit Montfort. Luckily, only one home was destroyed.
Today, the Wisconsin Farmers Union Specialty Cheese Company is in Montfort. They make a special kind of blue cheese called Montforte Blue Cheese. This cheese has won awards!

Montfort is located at coordinates 42.971399 degrees North and -90.432937 degrees West. It is surrounded by the town of Wingville, Wisconsin on its west, north, and south sides. To the east, it borders the town of Highland, Iowa County, Wisconsin.
