Life in Monument
The Monument School District once had a special science building. This building was about 7,000 square feet (650 square meters) and was used for teaching environmental science. Students learned about the local Ponderosa Pine forests and sagebrush steppe. They also studied the water quality and habitats of streams.
In 1997, the school had over 100 students. However, by 2000, the number of students dropped to 62. This happened because fewer families lived in the area. Many moved away as jobs in ranching and timber production decreased.
The city of Monument also saw a big drop in money it received from federal timber payments. These payments went from $100,000 in 1990 down to $5,000 in 2000. Even with these changes, Monument had important services for its community in 2000. These included a grocery store, a restaurant, a tavern, three churches, a senior center, and a fire station.
