History of Mooreville
The community of Mooreville got its name from the Moore family. They were the very first settlers to live there.
Back in 1900, Mooreville was a small but active place. It had an academy, which was like a school. There were also three churches where people could worship. The community had a masonic lodge and a Woodmen of the World lodge. These were groups where people met for social activities and support. At that time, only 54 people lived in Mooreville.
Geography of Mooreville
Mooreville is located in the eastern part of Lee County. You can find it along Mississippi Highway 178. It is about 7 miles (11 km) east of Tupelo, which is the main city and county seat. Mooreville is also about 4 miles (6 km) west of Dorsey.
The Interstate 22 / U.S. Route 78 freeway runs along the northern edge of Mooreville. You can get to Mooreville from Exit 94, which is Highway 371. Interstate 22 and U.S. Route 78 go northwest for about 113 miles (182 km) to Memphis, Tennessee. They also go southeast for about 124 miles (200 km) to Birmingham, Alabama. Highway 371 goes northeast about 7 miles (11 km) to Mantachie. It also goes south about 19 miles (31 km) to Bigbee.
The Mooreville area covers about 2.79 square miles (7.2 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the community's boundaries.
Two creeks flow through Mooreville. Boguegaba Creek runs through the western side of the community. Boguefala Creek flows through the eastern side. Both creeks flow south-southeast into the Tombigbee River. This river is located north of Amory. South Tulip Creek forms the western border of Mooreville. This creek flows southwest to Tulip Creek. Then it flows into Town Creek. Town Creek also flows south-southeast to the Tombigbee River, but south of Amory. The border between Lee and Itawamba counties forms the eastern edge of Mooreville.
