Moorine Rock is a small town located in the eastern farming region of Western Australia. It is about 347 kilometers (216 miles) east of Perth, the capital city. The town is also 22 kilometers (14 miles) west-southwest of Southern Cross.

Where is Moorine Rock?

Moorine Rock is found along the Great Eastern Highway. This important road connects Perth to the eastern goldfields. A railway line also runs through the town, linking Northam to Southern Cross.

How the Railway Station Started

The railway line opened in 1895, and a station was built here. It was first called Parkers Road. This name came from a nearby road that led to Parker Range. In 1888, a man named Mr. W. M. Parker had found gold in that area.

Becoming a Town

In 1923, a surveyor noticed that more land was needed around the Parkers Road station. So, in 1924, a survey was done to create building lots. By 1925, the area was officially declared a townsite and was named Parker Road.

How Moorine Rock Got Its Name

The name "Parker Road" caused some confusion. In 1926, the local Member of Parliament pointed out that it sounded too much like Parker Range, a gold mining area. It was also the name of a road in Southern Cross.

A New Name is Chosen

He suggested the name "Moorine," after a nearby rock formation called Moorine Rock. However, "Moorine" was too similar to the town of Moora. So, the full name "Moorine Rock" was chosen instead. The town's name officially changed in 1926.

What Does Moorine Rock Mean?

Moorine Rock is an Aboriginal name for some rocks close to the town. An explorer first wrote down this name in 1865. The exact meaning of the name is not known today.

What Services Does Moorine Rock Have?

Moorine Rock plays an important role in Western Australia's farming industry.

Grain Storage

In 1932, the Wheat Pool of Western Australia announced plans for the town. They decided to build two large grain elevators at the railway siding. These elevators help store and move grain. Each elevator was built with its own engine.

Farming in the Area

The land around Moorine Rock is very fertile. Farmers in this area grow a lot of wheat and other cereal crops. The town is a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling (CBH). This means farmers bring their harvested grain here to be collected and stored by CBH.

Train Services

The Prospector train service stops at Moorine Rock. This train travels between East Perth and Kalgoorlie. It usually runs once or twice each day, connecting people and goods across the region.
