Morton is a city located in Renville County, Minnesota, United States. It is about 95 miles southwest of Minneapolis. Morton is special because it serves as the main office for the Lower Sioux Indian Reservation. In 2020, the city had a population of 410 people.

History of Morton
Morton was first planned and laid out in 1882. It officially became a city in 1887. A famous writer and politician named Darby Nelson (who lived from 1940 to 2022) once called Morton home.
The Battle of Birch Coulee
An important historical event, the Battle of Birch Coulee, happened in 1862. This battle took place in the area that would later become the city of Morton and the nearby Birch Coulee Township.

Morton is known for something very special in geology. It is the original place where a type of rock called Morton Gneiss was found. This rock formation is one of the oldest in the world!
Uses of Morton Gneiss
People have been quarrying (digging up) Morton Gneiss from the local area since about 1884. This unique rock has become popular for making monuments and for the outside walls of buildings.
