A Look Back at Mosquero's History
Mosquero started as a stop for trains on the Dawson Railway. This railway was built in 1902. It connected Tucumcari to Dawson.
The name "Mosquero" comes from a Spanish word. It means "swarm of flies." People say this name came from flies that gathered around bison hunted by local native tribes.
The village was officially started in 1908 by Benjamin Brown. A post office opened in Mosquero that same year.
Mosquero grew as a place for farming and raising animals. It was also a shipping point for goods. The village even had a plant that made dry ice. This dry ice was made using carbon dioxide from wells nearby.
The railroad was taken away in 1950. After that, the dry ice plant was destroyed. The number of people living in Mosquero slowly became smaller.
