Mount Anne is a tall mountain found in the Southwest National Park. This park is in the south-west part of Tasmania, Australia. Mount Anne is also part of the Tasmanian Wilderness, which is a special place listed by UNESCO World Heritage. This means it's recognized as important for everyone in the world.

Mount Anne stands at 1,423 metres (4,669 ft) above sea level. It is one of the forty highest mountains in Tasmania. It is also the tallest mountain in south-west Tasmania. This makes it look very impressive and important in the area. It stands out over the land around Lake Pedder.

Exploring Mount Anne's Features

Mount Anne is mostly made of a rock called dolerite. But it also has a large section of dolomite rock underneath. This dolomite contains a huge system of caves. One of the most famous caves in this system is called 'Anna-a-Kananda'. It is known as one of the deepest caves in all of Australia. Exploring these deep caves can be very challenging.

The north-east ridge of Mount Anne has a wonderful area of very old plants. These plants are from a time when the supercontinent Gondwana existed. Some of these plant species are among the oldest still living on Earth today.

A Brief History of Mount Anne

Mount Anne got its name in 1835. George Frankland named it after his wife, Georgina Anne. In 1880, Henry Judd was the first to reach the Mount Anne Plateau from the Huon Valley.

The very first people to reach the top of Mount Anne were Walter Crookall and Geoff Chapman. They were members of the Hobart Walking Club. They made their way to the summit on December 25, 1929. For a long time, the hike to Mount Anne started from Maydena or Huonville. But after the Scotts Peak Dam Road was built in 1970, the long hike became a day-walk.

To make it easier for walkers to visit the mountain, the Hobart Walking Club built a hut. This hut was constructed on the nearby Mt Eliza in 1974. Mount Anne is a popular place for experienced bushwalkers. The Mount Anne circuit is a challenging walk that usually takes four days. This circuit can also include climbing to the summit of Mount Anne.
