Mount Benson is a tall mountain in Alaska, standing 4,465 feet (1,361 meters) high. It is part of the Kenai Mountains on the Kenai Peninsula. You can find it in the Chugach National Forest, looking over the Resurrection River and Resurrection Bay. The city of Seward, Alaska is not far away.
This mountain has a special story behind its name! It was first called Iron Mountain. But in 1974, its name was officially changed to honor a young boy named Benny Benson. Benny was only 13 years old when he designed Alaska's flag in 1927. He was a student in Seward at the time. What an amazing way to remember him!
Weather and Climate
Mount Benson is in a place with a subarctic climate. This means it has long, cold, and snowy winters. The summers are usually mild. Temperatures can drop very low, sometimes even below −20 °C (which is −4 °F). With the wind, it can feel even colder, below −30 °C (−22 °F)!
Because of this climate, you can find spruce and hemlock trees growing on the lower parts of the mountain. If you want to see Mount Benson when the weather is best, plan your visit for May or June. These months usually offer the clearest views.
