Mount Decoeli is a cool mountain peak in the Yukon, Canada. It stands tall at 2,332 meters (about 7,651 feet) and looks like a pyramid. This mountain is part of the Kluane Ranges in the Saint Elias Mountains.
You can find Mount Decoeli about 23 kilometers (14 miles) northwest of Haines Junction. It is also 21.4 kilometers (13.3 miles) east of Mount Cairnes. You can even see it from the Alaska Highway! The closest taller mountain is Mount Archibald, which is about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) to the south.
The name "Mount Decoeli" became official on August 12, 1980. It was named after E. T. de Coeli, who climbed Williams Peak with surveyor James J. McArthur in 1908. The name "Decoeli" is pronounced deh-sail-ee. The local Southern Tutchone people have their own name for the mountain: Nàday Gän. This means Dried Lynx Mountain.
Climbing Mount Decoeli
Climbing Mount Decoeli is a long and exciting day hike. You will gain about 1,332 meters (4,370 feet) in height. The total trip is about 18 kilometers (11 miles) round trip. The easiest way to climb involves some scrambling (a mix of hiking and easy climbing) up the south face and south ridge.
From the top, on a clear day, you can see amazing views into Kluane National Park. You might even spot giant mountains like Mount Logan, Mount Vancouver, and Mount Kennedy. There is also a repeater (a device that boosts radio signals) installed at the summit.
Weather at Mount Decoeli
Mount Decoeli is in a subarctic climate zone. This means it has long, cold, and snowy winters. The summers are usually mild. The average temperature in the area is about -6°C (21°F).
July is the warmest month, with an average temperature of 8°C (46°F). December is the coldest month. Temperatures can drop below -20°C (-4°F), and with wind chill, it can feel even colder than -30°C (-22°F). Water from rain and melting ice from the mountain's rock glacier flows into streams that lead to the Kaskawulsh River.
