Mount Downton is a tall mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It is the highest point in the Itcha Range. This mountain is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) wide. It sits inside Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park. Mount Downton is found in the Chilcotin District. It is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Anahim Lake.

The Story Behind the Name

Mount Downton got its name from Geoffrey M. Downton. He was a land surveyor in British Columbia. A lake called Downton Lake is also named after him. This lake is part of a big power project. In 1912, Mr. Downton noticed something important. He saw how water could be used to make electricity. This was because of the height difference between the Bridge River and Seton Lake.

How Mount Downton Was Formed

Mount Downton is part of the Anahim Volcanic Belt. This is a line of volcanoes that stretches from west to east. These volcanoes formed because the North American Plate moved over a very hot spot deep inside the Earth. This hot spot is called the Anahim hotspot. It is similar to the one that creates the Hawaiian Islands. Other nearby mountain ranges, like the Rainbow and Ilgachuz Ranges, are also part of this volcanic belt.
