Geography of Mount Eddy

Mount Eddy reaches a height of 9,037 feet (about 2,754 meters). It is the highest point in Trinity County. It is also the ninth most prominent peak in California. A prominent peak means it stands out a lot from the land around it. Mount Eddy is also the highest mountain west of Interstate 5, a major highway in the United States.

Location and Surroundings

Mount Eddy is located west of Mount Shasta City. It is also west of the huge Mount Shasta volcano. The mountain is protected within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. This forest helps keep the area wild and beautiful.

Winter Weather on the Mountain

Because Mount Eddy is so high, it gets a lot of snow during the winter. This makes it a snowy wonderland for many months of the year.

How Mount Eddy Got Its Name

Mount Eddy is named after Olive Paddock Eddy. People used to think she was the first woman to climb Mount Shasta. However, it was actually Harriet Catherine Eddy who was the first woman to reach the top of Mount Shasta. Olive Paddock Eddy was eight months pregnant when she was supposedly credited with the climb.

Nelson Harvey Eddy, who arrived in the area in 1856 from New York State, was a successful rancher. The local Wintu people had their own name for the mountain. They might have called it Num-mel-be-le-sas-pam, which means "west blaze mountain."
