Mount Emily holds a special place in American history. On September 9, 1942, during World War II, something unusual happened here. A Japanese submarine named I-25 came close to Cape Blanco in Oregon.

The submarine launched a small seaplane. This plane was piloted by a man named Nobuo Fujita. He flew over Mount Emily and dropped special bombs. These were incendiary bombs, which are designed to start fires.

The goal was to cause a large forest fire in the area. Luckily, the attempt was not successful. The bombs did not start a major fire.

This event made Mount Emily the second place in the continental United States to be bombed by an enemy aircraft. The first place was Dutch Harbor in Unalaska, Alaska, which happened three months earlier.

Because of its historical importance, the site of this bombing was recognized. In July 2006, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is known as the Wheeler Ridge Japanese Bombing Site.
