Mount Emmons is a cool mountain peak found in the Elk Mountains. This mountain range is part of the bigger Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA. You can find Mount Emmons in the north-central part of Gunnison County.
Exploring Mount Emmons
This impressive peak stands tall at about 12,401 feet (that's over 3,700 meters!) above sea level. It's located inside the Gunnison National Forest, which is a huge area of protected land. Mount Emmons is not far from the small town of Crested Butte, about 6.7 kilometers (or 4.2 miles) to its west-northwest.
How Mount Emmons Got Its Name
The mountain was named to honor a famous geologist named Samuel Franklin Emmons. Geologists are scientists who study the Earth's rocks and how the Earth was formed. There's actually another mountain named Mount Emmons in Utah, also named after him!
