Barndioota is a place in the southern Flinders Ranges area of South Australia. It is west of a town called Hawker. Barndioota used to be a town, but now it is known as a "locality." A locality is like a defined area or district.

About Barndioota

Barndioota is a locality that includes the land known as the Hundred of Barndioota. A "hundred" is an old way of dividing land in Australia. This area also contains the former town of Hookina. The original town of Barndioota was planned in 1883, but it stopped being an official town in 1929.

Traditional Owners

The original people who have lived in this area for thousands of years are the Aboriginal Adnyamathanha peoples. They are the traditional owners of the land around Barndioota.

Mount Eyre

In the northern part of Barndioota, you will find a place called Mount Eyre. This mountain was an important spot during an exploration trip in 1839. An explorer named Edward John Eyre reached this point. The mountain was named by Governor Gawler on July 11, 1839.

Local Discussions

In April 2016, there was a suggestion to build a special storage place for certain materials at Wallerberdina Station in Barndioota. This idea was discussed by many people. Some local residents, Aboriginal groups, and environmental groups did not agree with the proposal. A final decision about this storage facility is still being considered.
