Mount Grace is a very tall mountain in Alaska. It stands 10,540 feet (3,213 meters) high. This huge peak is covered in glaciers. It is part of the amazing Chugach Mountains.

Mount Grace is quite remote. It is about 63 miles (101 kilometers) east of Anchorage. The mountain is also near College Fjord. It sits on land managed by the Chugach National Forest.

Who Was Grace Hoeman?

Mount Grace is named after Dr. Grace (Jansen) Hoeman. She was a very skilled mountaineer and a doctor. Grace lived in Anchorage, Alaska. She loved climbing mountains.

Grace Hoeman climbed over 120 peaks in Alaska. She often climbed with her husband, Vin Hoeman. Sadly, Grace lost her life in an avalanche. This happened on the Eklutna Glacier in the Chugach Mountains. It was on April 12, 1971.

Grace made 20 first ascents in Alaska. A first ascent means she was the first person to climb that mountain or route. She even did several of these climbs by herself. In 1970, she led an all-women team. They successfully climbed to the top of Denali. Denali is the highest peak in North America.

Mount Grace is connected to Mount Goode by a high ridge. Grace's husband, Vin Hoeman, made the first ascent of Mount Goode in 1966.

Weather and Glaciers

Mount Grace has a subarctic climate. This means it has very long, cold, and snowy winters. The summers are usually cool. Weather systems come from the Gulf of Alaska. When they hit the Chugach Mountains, the air is forced upwards. This causes a lot of rain and snow. This effect is called orographic lift.

Temperatures on Mount Grace can drop very low. They can go below −4 °F (−20 °C). With the wind, it can feel even colder. This cold climate helps keep the Knik Glacier huge. The glacier surrounds Mount Grace. The best time to climb Mount Grace is usually in May and June. The weather is often better then.
