The Story of Mount Helena
Mount Helena wasn't always called that! It was first known as White's Mill. This name came from Abraham White. In 1882, he built a saw mill with Edward Vivien Harvey Keane and James Wright. This mill made wooden sleepers for the Eastern Railway. This railway was being built from Guildford to Chidlows Well.
Later, from 1898, the area was called Lion Mill. But in 1924, it got its current name, Mount Helena. The local Progress Association really wanted a new name. Their first idea, "Hillcrest," was rejected because another place in New South Wales already had that name.
Their next suggestion, "Mount Helena," was a success! This name fit the area well because it has hills. It also showed that the suburb was in the middle of the Helena River district.
