Mount Hope is a small town. It is located on the Flinders Highway. This highway runs along the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.
About Mount Hope
Mount Hope was once the end point for a railway line. This line came from Yeelanna. The railway operated from 1914 until 1966. After that, the tracks were removed.
History of Mount Hope
The town of Mount Hope was officially planned in 1916. It was first suggested to be named Mount Woakwine. However, this name was never used.
The land around Mount Hope was traditionally home to the Nauo people. They are an Aboriginal Australian group. The first European to travel through this area was Edward John Eyre. He explored the region in 1839.
Mount Hope had a school that opened in 1911. It taught children in the area for many years. The school eventually closed its doors in 1974. In 1912, the school also had a Sunday School. The same teacher taught both the regular school and the Sunday School.

Mount Hope is part of several government areas. It is in the federal division of Grey. This is how people vote for national leaders. It is also in the state electoral district of Flinders. This is for voting in state elections. Lastly, it is part of the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula. This is the local government that manages services for the town.
