Mount Irvine is a tall mountain located in the Sierra Nevada range in California. Its very top, called the summit, is part of the beautiful Inyo National Forest and the wild John Muir Wilderness.
Why is it Called Mount Irvine?
This mountain was named to remember Andrew Irvine, a brave climber. He was part of a British expedition to Mount Everest in 1924. Sadly, he passed away during that trip. Another famous climber, Norman Clyde, suggested naming the peak after Irvine. He also suggested naming a peak after George Mallory. Both Irvine and Mallory had climbed higher on Mount Everest than anyone before them.
Where is Mount Irvine?
Mount Irvine is found in a special part of California. It is located southeast of Mount Whitney. Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the lower 48 United States. To the south of Mount Irvine is another mountain called Mount Mallory. The very top of Mount Irvine is about a quarter mile east of the Sierra Crest. The Sierra Crest is like the backbone of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is located in Inyo County.
