Mount Keen (Scottish Gaelic: Monadh Caoin) is a tall mountain in Scotland, standing 939 meters (about 3,081 feet) high. It's special because it's the most eastern 'Munro' – a Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet tall. It's also known as a 'Marilyn', which is a hill with a drop of at least 150 meters on all sides.

You can reach Mount Keen from different paths, like those starting from Glen Mark in the south, Glen Tanar in the north, or Braid Cairn in the east. Many people enjoy a moderate hike or even a mountain bike ride to the top. A popular way to start is by cycling through the beautiful Caledonian pine forest in Glen Tanar, beginning near Aboyne. On a clear day, you can see amazing views of other famous mountains, like the Cairngorms and especially Lochnagar. At the very top, you'll find a 'trig point' – a special marker used by mapmakers.

Exploring Mount Keen: The Paths

The paths leading up to Mount Keen are generally in great condition. If you start from Aboyne and Glen Tanar, you'll find a wide forestry track for most of the way to the base of the mountain.

Path Conditions Near the Top

As you get closer to the summit, the path becomes quite rocky. During winter, these rocky sections can get frozen and slippery, so it's important to be careful.

Reaching the Summit

The summit of Mount Keen offers fantastic views. It's also a good spot for mobile phone reception, especially for Vodafone and O2 users, because there's a clear line of sight to a nearby signal mast.

Safety at the Top

Be aware that there's a steep drop on the east side of the summit. If it's icy, you need to be extra careful. You can find some limited shelter near large boulders at the top. The trig point at the summit helps walkers figure out their exact location.

Bridge Access

In 2002, a footbridge at the base of Mount Keen on the Glen Tanar side was washed away. To make it easier for people to access this popular Munro, a new bridge has been built, improving the route for everyone.
