Discovering Mount King Edward
Mount King Edward is part of the Continental Divide. This is like a giant line across North and South America. It separates which way rivers flow. Rivers on one side flow to the Pacific Ocean. Rivers on the other side flow to the Atlantic Ocean.
Where is it Located?
Mount King Edward is right on the border between Alberta and British Columbia. It is very close to another large mountain, Mount Columbia. Mount Columbia is about 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) to the east.
How it Got its Name
The mountain was named in 1906. A person named Mary Schäffer gave it its name. She named it after King Edward VII. He was the King of the United Kingdom at that time.
First Climbers to Reach the Top
The first time anyone successfully climbed Mount King Edward was in 1924. A group of brave climbers made it to the top. This group included J. W. A. Hickson and Howard Palmer. They were guided by a famous mountain guide named Conrad Kain.
Before this, in 1920, A. Carpe and H. Palmer tried to climb the west side. They got very high, reaching about 3,292 meters (10,800 feet). But they did not make it all the way to the very top that time.
