Mount Prophet is a very tall and wild mountain found in the North Cascades area of Washington state. It's known for being very steep and far away from towns and roads. This makes it a tough place to reach. The mountain is located between several quiet valleys, west of Ross Lake and east of the Picket Range.

Because it's so hard to get to, not many people have tried to climb Mount Prophet. The first time someone successfully climbed it was in September 1975. Two climbers, Dan Sjolseth and his partner, were the first to reach its top.

Why is it Called Mount Prophet?

Mount Prophet was named after a man named Tommy Rowland. He was a "prospector" who lived near the Skagit River in the late 1800s. A prospector is someone who explores an area looking for valuable minerals, like gold. Tommy Rowland was known for his strong religious beliefs, which led to the mountain being called "Prophet."

Mount Prophet's Size and Location

Mount Prophet is surrounded by the valleys of two different Beaver Creeks and Arctic Creek. The mountain rises very steeply from the valley floor. This steep rise gives it a "prominence" of over 4,000 feet (1,220 m). Prominence means how much a mountain stands out from the land around it. It's like measuring how tall it is from its base, not just from sea level.

Mount Prophet is actually the 18th most prominent peak in all of Washington state. This shows how much it stands out compared to other mountains.

Getting to Mount Prophet

Since Mount Prophet is so remote, getting there can be a real adventure. There are a few trails that lead to areas near the mountain. The closest one is called the Little Beaver-Big Beaver Loop. This trail is about 26.5 miles (42.6 km) long. It's a long journey just to get close to the mountain!
