Mount Stuart is a neighborhood in Hobart, Australia. It sits on a ridge that comes from a smaller hill called Knocklofty. This hill is part of the larger Mount Wellington.

History of Mount Stuart

The land where Mount Stuart is now located originally belonged to the Mouheneenner band. They were part of the South East tribe of Tasmanian aborigines. In 1803, British people started settling in the area. This led to changes in who owned the land.

How Mount Stuart Got Its Name

Mount Stuart is named after a person called Mountstuart Elphinstone. He was a important leader, known as a Governor of Bombay (which is now called Mumbai) in India.

In 1836, a ship named Mountstuart Elphinstone visited Hobart town. This ship brought exciting news! It announced that the Lieutenant-Governor, George Arthur, was ordered to return to London. Many people in Hobart were not happy with some of his rules. To celebrate this news, locals named two roads near the town 'Mount Stuart Road' and 'Elphinstone Road'.

Over time, the area around Mount Stuart Road became known as 'Mount Stuart'. Later, a larger area outside 'Hobart Town' was called 'Mount Stuart Town'. This included much of what is now West Hobart. The hill of Knocklofty was also sometimes called Mount Stuart. Around 1908, Mount Stuart Town became part of Hobart. Today, Mount Stuart uses the general Hobart postcode of 7000. West Hobart slowly became its own separate neighborhood. The Knocklofty hill is now a special nature reserve. Near the reserve, there's a water reservoir where people can enjoy great views of Hobart.
