New Town is a suburb in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It's about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) north of Hobart's city center. Many people think it's Hobart's oldest suburb. Settlers arrived there just one week after they landed at Sullivans Cove in 1804.
Long ago, many rich families lived in New Town. Because of this, you can see many grand homes, churches, and public buildings there. After the World Wars, the large farms were divided into smaller blocks. Now, New Town is a busy residential suburb close to the city. Many streets have lovely Federation style cottages. New Town is surrounded by other suburbs like North Hobart, Mount Stuart, Lenah Valley, and Moonah. The Queen's Domain is also nearby. Most of New Town is part of the Hobart local government area. A small part (2.5%) is in Glenorchy.
New Town's Past
Hobart was re-settled on the western side of the Derwent River in 1804. The first free settlers arrived at New Town Bay on February 21, 1804. This was just one day after soldiers and convicts landed on Hunter Island. Some very old buildings are still standing. For example, Pitt Farm is the second oldest farmhouse in Australia.
St John's Anglican Church in New Town has been used continuously since 1835. The first church service was held there on December 20, 1835. John Lee Archer, a government engineer and architect, designed the building.
The New Town Post Office first opened its doors on January 1, 1842.
In 2002, Video City opened Australia's largest video rental shop on New Town Road. This store was a popular place for a long time. It stayed busy even after online streaming became popular in the 2010s. The store closed in 2019 after selling its huge collection of over 30,000 video titles.
New Town Today
New Town is home to Tasmania's only two single-sex public schools. These are Ogilvie High School for girls and New Town High School for boys. There is also a large Catholic school called Sacred Heart College, New Town Campus, with over 1000 students. New Town Primary School is also very old, having been around for more than a hundred years.
The main shopping center in New Town is Centro New Town Plaza. Here, you can find a Kmart, a Coles Supermarket, and many smaller specialty shops.
New Town is famous for its beautiful streets with lots of trees. You can see many different styles of homes here. These include Colonial, Georgian, Federation, Italianate, and Art Deco designs. Many large homes and mansions are spread throughout the suburb. Famous architects like Thomas Reibey Atkinson and Henry Hunter designed some of these homes.
The InterCity Cycleway runs right through New Town. This path connects Claremont to the city center.
The main road in New Town is called "New Town Road." It continues from Elizabeth Street in Hobart. This road links Hobart with the nearby city of Glenorchy. Other important roads in New Town include Augusta Road, which leads to Lenah Valley, and Giblin Street, which becomes Forster Street and then Risdon Road, heading towards the Brooker Highway.
