Explorers from the Discovery Expedition first mapped Mount Terra Nova between 1901 and 1904. It was named after the ship Terra Nova. This ship helped both the Discovery expedition and the British Antarctic Expedition (1910–1913).

Discovering Mount Terra Nova

Mount Terra Nova was first seen and mapped by a team of explorers. The Discovery expedition was a very important journey to Antarctica. It helped people learn more about this icy continent.

How Mount Terra Nova Got Its Name

The mountain was named after a special ship called Terra Nova. This ship played a big role in early Antarctic exploration. It helped bring supplies and people to the frozen land.

Features Around Mount Terra Nova

Mount Terra Nova is part of a fascinating landscape on Ross Island. There are other important natural features nearby that share its name.

Terra Nova Saddle

The Terra Nova Saddle is one of three important snowy saddles on Ross Island. A saddle is a low point between two higher areas. This saddle is about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) high. It sits between Mount Erebus and Mount Terra Nova. It got its name because it's close to Mount Terra Nova, which is 2,130 meters (6,990 feet) tall and lies to its east.

Terra Nova Glacier

The Terra Nova Glacier is a large glacier about 9 kilometers (5 nautical miles) long. It is located in the north-central part of Ross Island. This glacier flows north from the saddle between Mount Erebus and Mount Terra Nova. It then empties into Lewis Bay. It is also named for its closeness to Mount Terra Nova.
