The Sleeping Lion Mountain

Mount Wellington is famous for its unique shape. When you look at it from Cooperstown, New York, it looks just like a lion. This lion appears to be laying down and sleeping peacefully. Because of this, many people call it "The Sleeping Lion."

How Mount Wellington Got Its Name

This mountain was not always called Mount Wellington. It was first known as Mount Millington. The name was changed by a man named George Hyde Clarke. He renamed the mountain to honor a very important person.

That person was The 1st Duke of Wellington. He was a famous military leader from England. The Duke of Wellington was known for winning the Battle of Waterloo. This was a very important battle in history. George Hyde Clarke and the Duke of Wellington had gone to school together. They both attended Eton College in England.
